In Think & Write, students build the foundational critical thinking and essay-writing skills required to excel in Smart Writing.
Every week, students will rewrite their essays based on Teacher Brandon’s personalized writing feedback, which is sent directly to parents via Line to ensure their skills continually improve and progress is transparent.
Tr. Brandon will guide students through structured writing exercises meant to sharpen their command of the written word and transition them smoothly from basic sentences to complete, multi-paragraph compositions. Students that complete this course can confidently move up to Smart Writing.
For each unit, Tr. Brandon introduces high-level academic vocabulary and introduces a proprietary writing scaffold. While Tr. Brandon demonstrates the structural formulas for tackling each essay type, students actively drive the brainstorming and fill the scaffolds with their own independent arguments.
Throughout the semester, students will master multiple essential essay genres, including informative (with a focus on paraphrasing), persuasive, text-based analytical (learning to cite textual evidence), refutation, and compare & contrast essays.
The course is divided into intensive 4-week thematic units designed to expose students to a wide variety of English texts, spanning timeless literature and poetry, global science, history, and current events. Alongside reading and writing, vocabulary and grammar will also be studied through interactive games and targeted exams.
At the end of every 4-week unit, students will pick sides, write short arguments and rebuttals, and participate in an in-class debate.
