A new Champion has been born – Draven and Jordan! They won the Peninsula California Invitational Novice Policy Division! Their records were second to none in the Peninsula tournament and has set a new record in ADL as well as the youngest debaters (only 6th graders) to win a novice policy division. They were the top team in the prelim! Furthermore, Jordan was 2nd Speaker and Draven was the 5th!

Something’s cooking right at ADL – its high caliber coaching, Harvard camp, teamwork, and parent support. For this success, we again pay our deepest tribute to our amazing coaches – Tyler, Dylan, Brandon, and the Harvard crew – Tripp, Maggie, and Liz!

Kelly Phil and Micah Wang broke ADL and Taiwan history by receiving the first TOC Bid in policy. This is their second TOC-bid, qualifying themselves to the U.S. TOC Tournament to be held in April 2020. Mira Baba and Ethan Tai also broke to doubles and Kelly was the top speaker. We would like to thank our wonderful coaches Tyler and Dylan, our two major contributors to this success.

ADL policy students have shaken up Michigan High School Tournament with impressive records! We are small in number, but strong is our presence!

Before the tournament, Kelly and Micah were one of the top 9 teams invited to the prestigious Michigan Senior Round Robin, and took 3rd place team award. In addition, Kelly took the 2nd place speaker award, and Micah was the 11th in speaker rank.

Kelly and Micah also broke at the Varsity Policy Division – Double Octafinalist! Kelly was also the 12th speaker out of 211 debaters!

Both teams – Ray & Adam and Mira & Ryan – won 3 rounds in varsity division, which is actually extremely difficult to do and exceeded their own expectations because they were prepared to lose and learn from this tournament since they were mostly going against kids much older in age and experience.

Then as Dylan says, “ADL students have taken the Novice Policy Division by storm!

A new champion has been born – Jay & Jacqueline Chu! Their records are second to none in the Michigan tournament and has set a new record in ADL as well. They won 8 out of 9 rounds with 17 out of 18 votes; 2nd best seed in the prelim rounds; Jacqueline was the 3rd and Jay was the 8th speaker!!

2019-10 Michigan 5

More wins were claimed:

  • Chloe and Miria –  Quarterfinalist!
  • Judy and Noah – Octafinalist!
  • Draven and Jordan – won 4 rounds, almost breaking to octafinalist!

Top Speakers from a total of 106 debaters:

  • Chloe Wang – 2nd Speaker!
  • Jacqueline Chu – 3rd Speaker!
  • Noah Huang – 4th Speaker!
  • Jay Chu – 8th Speaker!
  • Miria – 10th Speaker!
  • Judy – 11th Speaker!
  • Draven – 25th Speaker!
  • Jordan – 28th Speaker!

Something’s cooking right at ADL – its high caliber coaching, teamwork, and parent support. For this success, we again pay our deepest tribute to our amazing coaches – Tyler, Dylan, Kelly, Brandon, Ariqq!

If you have a “will,” then there is a “way” in ADL for you to be the best you can be!

2019-9 UK 1

National Speech & Debate Season Opener hosted by University of Kentucky is the very first prominent U.S. tournament that attracts the most devoted policy students, usually those who have attended summer camps.   ADL’s most devoted policy students (including novice students) participated this tournament to gear up for their entire year of competitive season. At the award ceremony, even U.S. students enthusiastically applauded for Kelly and Micah, respecting their high seed and speaker ranks in the varsity division; Kelly was also singled out and pronounced by Stefan as the “Best Debater in Asia!”   However, the most fiercely courageous were our middle school novice teams who didn’t mind getting themselves slaughtered by the top ranking U.S. high school policy teams in the varsity division. Their attitude was “we know we won’t win, but we go there to learn,” and learn they did. How can you not applaud for these kids? How can you not applaud for their parents who take them there?   Most high achiever from the novice teams were Mira and Ryan; they were one round shy of breaking in the varsity division, and Mira was also very impressively the 34th speaker out of 154 high school students in varsity division.   Another special moment that made this tournament worthwhile for our novice teams were the three exhibition debate rounds with the top ranking Montgomery teams.   Huge shout out to our amazing coaches Tyler, Dylan, Ariqq, and Parker!!!
