English, French and US University Prep
Rachel Williams. Dr. Rachel Williams holds an M.A. in Comparative Literature and a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies. She has taught English as a Second Language at Université Lumière Lyon II in Lyon, France, and in American universities has taught courses in English writing, composition, and literature for both native and non-native speakers and French language, literature, and culture courses at all levels.
All levels of French tutoring are offered, from introductory (little to no experience with French) to intermediate and advanced levels. The focus is on the four quadrants of language-learning: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, oral production, and written production and lessons are personally tailored to each student’s level and goals. The tutoring services target the acquisition of grammar and vocabulary, as well as cultural knowledge, and students will practice comprehending and responding to increasingly sophisticated oral and written passages and on their oral and written production for both formal and informal situations. For advanced students, tutoring and instruction in content-based modules (French and Francophone culture, French for business, French and Francophone literature) is also available.
English and US University Prep
SL tutoring for advanced-level English learners planning to study in American universities offers students the opportunity to perfect their English, both written and oral, in order to succeed in their studies while becoming well-versed in the culture of the American university experience, both in the classroom and beyond. This service will aid students in the following areas:
Academic success: Advanced ESL tutoring prepares students to understand and to be able to discuss and write about sophisticated texts as they will be called upon to do in the classroom. Texts will mirror those used in introductory-level college courses, with a particular focus on preparation for introductory-level composition and writing courses that are part of the core curriculum at the majority of American universities.
Classroom culture: International students can expect lively classrooms based largely on discussion, participation, and interaction with their professors and fellow students in the American university classroom. Tutoring services will prepare students to thrive in this environment and give them the confidence to fully participate and thus succeed academically.
Beyond the classroom: This service also prepares students for their experiences beyond the classroom: what to expect from the American college campus experience, how to get involved with their fellow students, and how to take advantage of the numerous opportunities beyond course study that will aid them academically, professionally, and socially.
Rachel is available for individual tutoring for $100/hour and students may enroll in her online courses for $65/hour, with a 10 hour minimum.
