ADL Programs: Debate, Writing, Speech

1. Register – Root Words

English is difficult because it is a mixture of many western languages. However, if you master the root words, learning new words becomes fun and logical because root words are the basis of all western languages. This class fixes this problem for good. Jessie Chen has invented an innovative ways to teach root words in a fun way by playing games–guaranteed your child will love this class!

2. Register – News Presentation

Current news discussions and writings are one of the best ways to apply abstract concepts acquired in schools into a real life situations and examples.  This is a perfect class to prepare the kids for more advance classes like debate. This is also a perfect class to get the shy kids to talking, unskilled writers to editing their own news journals, and naive kids to seeing the light of the day in a real world.

3. Register – Refutation

Refutation Refutation involves critical thinking with logical questioning and answering. This class is a prerequisite to all debate classes and is dedicated to teaching students the very basic skills of refutation: 1) deny, 1) devalue, and 3) debar.  This is students’ favorite class which is designed to stimulate students’ critical thinking skills by engaging them in competitive games.

4. Register – Smart Debate

Smart Debate is designed as a warm up class for the more advance debate classes. This class is perfect for younger students or for students who need more scaffolding in English language. The debate topics for this particular class are carefully chosen to do the following: 1) topics are based on current events; 2) topics are interesting and educational for the students; and 3) topics are not overly challenging. For these reasons, we call this class a “smart debate.” Through this class, an average student can become “smart” about what is happening in the world.

5. Register – Public Forum Debate

Public forum debate can be compared to a nationally-televised CNN Crossfire in which the debaters argue a topic of national importance. Successful public forum debaters must make persuasive and logical arguments in a manner that is accessible to a wide variety of audiences. Public Forum Debate is perfect for students who are too busy and simply cannot debate for the whole semester due to other school activities. Because its topic and tournaments are run on a monthly basis, students in this program can pick and choose a month s/he can commit.

6. Register – Policy Debate

Policy Debate is a form of debate in which two teams (Affirmative and Negative) argue for and against a resolution that typically calls for policy change by the United States federal government. This is recognized as one of the most difficult and challenging type of debate because it involves in-depth research, practice, and speed. Because of its high recognition, more college scholarships are given to policy than any other types of debate. This is truly a debate that trains the mind of future elites.

7. Register – Pre-BA/MA Speech & Debate

If you are planning to get a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in the U.S., be prepared to make presentations, presentations, and more presentations. If you are shy, if you do not know how to argue, if you can’t debate about current topics of the day, you will surely feel left out in the classroom discussions. Public forum Debate is the perfect solution for those who are preparing for B.A. or M.A. degrees in the U.S.

The writing curriculum is developed byJessie Chen, the CEO of Taipei Debate Academy and Asian Debate League. She is a published author with a Cum Laude in English Literature, Summa Cum Laude in Masters in Teaching English, and a former college instructional aid and a high school English teacher. Jessie as the most competent and innovative English teacher in the United States is documented as she holds the record highest score on PRAXIS Exam.

Elementary Listening, Writing, & Grammar is for students who are at a beginning level of writing who wants to become proficient at writing. This class is designed to enhance creative writing skills of your child by: 1) listening, taking notes, and reading short stories; 2) memorizing fun adjectives; 3) applying what they have read through writing; and 4) learn conventional grammar.

2. Register – Kids Book Writing


Kids Book Writing class is designed to enhance creative writing skills of your child in a short period of time by: 1) reading fun literature; 2) analyzing and memorizing the fun adjectives; 3) applying what they have read through creative writing; 4) compiling their writings into a personal book; 5) presenting their writing pieces in public with confidence and gestures. Kids Book Writing is for students who are at a beginning level of writing who wants to become proficient at writing.

3. Register – Critical Writing & Grammar

Critical Writing & Grammar is for students who have completed “Kids Book Writing” class and want to continue to improve their writing skills. The class is designed to enhance critical writing skills of your child by: 1) reading grade level U.S. exam literature; 2) memorizing vocabularies; 3) applying what they have read through writing; and 4) learning conventional grammar.

Creative Writing is for students who have completed “Kids Book Writing” class and want to continue to improve their writing skills. The class curriculum is developed by Jessie Chen in order to enhance creative writing skills of your child in a short period of time by: 1) reading fun literature; 2) analyzing and memorizing the fun adjectives; 3) applying what they have read through creative writing; 4) compiling their writings into a personal book; 5) presenting their writing pieces in public with confidence and gestures.

5. Register – Academic Vocab, Reading, Writing


Academic Vocab, Reading, Writing class is for students who are aiming for higher scores on all English related classes in middle & high schools. The class curriculum is designed to force intellectual expansion of your child in a short period of time by 1) critically reading challenging scholarly articles, 2) writing interpretive critiques on the scholarly articles, 3) and analyzing and memorizing the Academic words and other advance vocabularies by applying JC’s innovative learning methods.

6. Register – PSAT Vocab, Reading, Writing

PSAT Vocab, Reading, Writing class is for college bound students who are aiming for higher scores on SAT and better grades in all English related classes in high schools. This class is designed to force intellectual expansion of your child in a short period of time by 1) critically reading challenging philosophical literature, 2) writing interpretive critiques on the philosophical literature, 3) and analyzing and memorizing the SAT words and other advance vocabularies by applying JC’s innovative learning methods.

7. Register – JC’s SAT Prep

SAT PrepJC’s SAT Prep is for students who need to enhance their reading comprehension and writing performance in all assessment exams, including SAT. In order to enhance students’ SAT scores, this class focuses on 1) vocabulary memorization, 2) test taking strategies, and 3) skill drills in the following areas: a) multiple practice SAT exams; b) SAT vocabulary memorization; c) passage vocab & background knowledge; d) test taking strategies; and e) daily focused drills on essay writing, grammar, critical reading, and whatever is necessary to improve students’ test scores.

1. Register – Public Speaking

Public speaking is #1 fear for most people, according to Daniel J. DeNoon, WebMD Health News. In this class, we teach your child to overcome this fear by studying great orators of our time, replicating their speeches in a format called “Declamation.”  Students also learn to write their own introduction for the speech they have chosen.

 

 

2. Register – Extemporaneous Speech

What is Extemporaneous Speech? “Extemp” for short (United States and International)

A contestant draws three questions, selects one, then has 30 minutes to prepare a speech in response. The contestant utilizes files of published materials (books, magazines, newspapers, online sources) s/he has compiled as a resource for answering the question. At the completion of the 30 minute preparation period, the student speaks on the topic for up to 7 minutes. The NFL divides extemp. into two separate events: United States (dealing with domestic issues), and International (issues beyond US borders).

 

3. Register – Kids Drama

Kids Drama is for all kids who are in 2nd grade or higher. Through fun drama performance, kids in this class will learn to express themselves freely with confidence. They will learn to understand and express other people’s emotions, thoughts, and actions.  This is also a great class to help your child overcome all fears related to public performance and enhance his English fluency at the same time.

 

4. Register – Competitive Drama

Competitive Drama is for students who need more individual attention and coaching for their “dramatic interpretation” competition or other drama related competitions. ADL teachers are qualified to prepare students for the most prestigious U.S. competitions such as NJFL or NFL. However, we can also train students for locally-held Taiwanese competitions.
